How to Maintain Your Pool Table for Longevity

A well-built pool table can last for generations, but only if it's cared for. The good news: most of what keeps a table playing true is quick, weekly upkeep — not major work. Here's what actually matters.

Brush and Vacuum the Felt Weekly

Chalk dust and debris wear down felt fibers over time and slow the roll of the balls. Use a soft billiard brush to sweep the felt from the center out toward the rails after each use, and vacuum it on a low, brushless setting every week or two to lift dust out of the weave.

Keep the Table Level

Even a small shift in leveling throws off every shot on the table. Check level every few months using a torpedo level or a few practice rolls from different spots on the table. Most tables have adjustable levelers in the legs — small adjustments go a long way.

Clean the Balls, Not Just the Table

Dirty balls transfer grime back onto clean felt almost immediately. Wipe balls down with a microfiber cloth and a small amount of mild soap and water every few weeks, then dry them fully before returning them to play.

Watch Humidity and Temperature

Slate itself is stable, but the wood cabinet and rails can react to swings in humidity. Try to keep the room within a consistent, moderate humidity range and avoid placing the table near direct sunlight, vents, or radiators, which can dry out or warp wood components over time.

Re-Felt Every 3–5 Years

Even with regular care, felt wears down with play. For a table that sees regular use, plan on professional re-felting every 3 to 5 years to keep the roll consistent and the surface looking sharp. Heavier-use tables (bars, lounges, frequent league play) may need it sooner.

Protect It Between Uses

A fitted table cover is a simple way to keep dust, spills, and pets off the felt when the table isn't in use — especially useful in multi-purpose rooms.

When to Call a Professional

Re-felting, releveling after a move, rail cushion replacement, and pocket repairs are all worth leaving to a professional — done incorrectly, they can affect how the table plays for years. If your table needs service, our team can help with repair, releveling, and moving.
